Mann was offering free refreshments this past weekend to lure people to the Glendale 4. I wonder how this Summer will play out? The Beverly Center and Beverly Connection did get first run bookings after the Grove opened, but eventually lost all new bookings once the Grove really took off.

Im sure a safe move would be to keep kid and family friendly movies over at the 4-plex (since it has stadium seating and decent sized auditoriums). Put more higher end movies and the blockbusters over at the Pacific.

I sense the nails are in the coffin for the 10 plex.

According to IMDB showtimes both Sex and the City will be opening and the Pacific 18 AND both Mann 4 and 10 theatres. The Strangers will open at the Pacific and the Mann 10. Indiana Jones also gains a screen at the Mann 10 this Friday. Look like all theatres will be sharing all films?

That is interesting. I've never seen that type of booking for theatres in such a close radius. It is good for Mann, at least they could get continuous bookings of new product; the Glendale 10 had been running that same films for about a month.

Does anyone know how these booking arrangements are made? Is it the 2 theatre chains that come to terms or is it the distributors or both? Does population count? It seems for opening weekend at the Pacific it got exclusives on Iron Man and Made of Honor, but nothing after that.

The 2 places I know where simultaneous bookings happen to theatres not of the same chain but right near each other are the Edwards and AMC Ontario, CA plexes and Cinemark and AMC plexes in downtown Long Beach.

If they can do it in Glendale, why can't Mann try to book the same films at the Beverly Center that Pacific does at the Grove less than a couple miles away? Or the Chinese and Arclight for that matter?

Can you imagine if the Beverly Center got the same bookings as The Grove? If the rumored AMC Plex is built at the Beverly Center the bookings may mirror.

It is an arrangement between the studios and operators. Originally, when the AMC and Edwards in Ontario started playing day-and-date it was only with select studios. Now I believe all studios play in both locations at the same time. The same was true in Long Beach for Cinemark and AMC and it may still be the case.

It really is to the benefit of both operators to play the same product. If Mann pulls a big booking from Pacific then they suffer and vice versa.

However, the studios loose since they cannot play the operators against each other when negotiating the booking deal.

I guess a case where they would not want to share would be if one operator had a chance of knocking another out of the market. Such might be the case in Lynnwood, WA where the relatively new AMC Loews Alderwood 16 is going head to head with Regal Alderwood Stadium 7. They do not play the same films and AMC Loews dominates. Regal, however, does seem to get the occasional great booking, but they usually spread it over 3 screens.

I guess Pacific and Mann decided not to fight in Glendale. Pacific probably feels it will prevail in the long run. Perhaps they will just wait for competition to crumble and take over Mann's theatres and turn them into an Art House/Move-Over/Overflow houses like they did in South Bay and Sherman Oaks.

I went. First things first - this joint is DEFINITELY TOP MASKING! I pity the poor souls who sat through Indy 4 & Kung Fu Panda with half the the screen disappeared. Yeah, the auditoriums are wide, but the projection & sound are both subpar.

All in all, the theatre - and the mall itself - is "Mini-Grove". And just as overrated as it's big brother, too.

I've never been to the Mann 4 so I can't give a fair comparison...

...however, I would have to say "Yes" because, despite their lack of business savvy, Mann Theatres has ALWAYS been known for their SHOWMANSHIP - which this new Pacific has ABSOLUTELY ZERO of!
