Long time reader...first time poster...

Anyway, I live in Costa Mesa and this past Friday I visited Orange County's newest theatre, Krikorian Premiere Theatres Metroplex 18 in Buena Park. The theatre is located behind the Buena Park Mall and it's walking distance to the amusement park Knotts Berry Farm.

What attracted me to the place was their website claiming that their 4 biggest auditoriums were "the biggest stadium seating auditoriums in Orange County". Boy did they exaggerate!

We went on Friday night to see X2. The theatre itself was OK. Seating was nice. Sound was OK. But those "big auditoriums" were NOT worth the hype! They allegedly have 500 seats (looked like less than that) and the screen was allegedly a 60 Footer. You could easily fit those "large" auditoriums into the 4 Colossus auditoriums at AMC's The Block at Orange! Ditto for the 2 large ones at Century Stadium 25 (also in Orange), the legendary big screen at Edwards Newport, and the Chinese/Egyptian/Hollywood/Palace auds @ Edwards Irvine Spectrum 21 (where I saw X2 again on Sunday).

The only advantage this theatre has is that their standard auditoriums are pretty good in terms of screen size...much larger than the standard auds @ Irvine Spectrum.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this place a 6.

Dug this thread up to mention the Krikorian Buena Park Metroplex 18 has apparently converted to digital. Their newspaper adds are now listing Buena Park as "all digital presentation". They had been including partial digital in their new builds (one or two auditoriums), but this is their first full conversion. I also noticed that they had two film presentations last week, so they may not have removed all of the projectors; considering that the projectors were less than five years old, one would think they'd want a little more use out of them (perhaps, some were utilized at one of the new builds).

I believe Cinema City (formerly Sanborn/SoCal's Cinemopolis), in Anaheim Hills, is the only other Orange County theatre with full digital, at this time.

Technically, their auditoriums were the largest among Orange County stadium builds. They actually made a point of having the square footage and screen size slightly larger. I forget the exact difference, but they were/are larger. However, it was definitely a numbers game and not something patrons could notice (i.e. the difference was basically non functional space, just to have the title of "largest"). As for seat count, I believe the four large auditoriums ended up around 450 each, after ADA standards were figured in (they also used seating with a larger footprint than other theatres).

Chris - I believe most theatres are keeping their 35mm projectors for the time being. Not all films are available in digital. Cinema City (formerly Cinemapolis) still has 35mm presentations, and I've noticed at Irvine Spectrum, Metro Pointe, and Edwards Long Beach that their "digital" auds still have two projectors installed (three if you want to count the cheapie semi-portable Christie DLP they use for pre-shows).
