There were a lot of open air theatres, most numerous in the silent days, & some stuck around for a while into the sound area.

Permanent structures were called Air Domes or Airdomes, & lots of cities had summer/spring movies in municipal parks in cooperation with a local business that could supply the equipment.

Many of the Airdomes in the silent days did well enough that the owners razed them & built more substantial theaters on the sites.
