Because Loew's Theatres merged with the Lorillard tobacco company in the 1960s, the TobaccoDocuments.com web site has Loew's annual reports from 1965 onward. Each year, this document contains a short report of how each business unit is doing, including the theatre unit. Many of the reports have photos of then-current Loew's theatres and artists' drawings of future ones.
The 1965, 1966, and 1967 reports contain a list of every Loew's theatre (and every Loew's hotel, too). Unfortunately, they stopped including this list after 1967.
1965 annual report
1966 annual report
1967 annual report
1968 annual report
1969 annual report
1970 annual report
1971 annual report
1972 annual report
1973 annual report
1974 annual report (this one is quite uninformative)
1975 annual report (also uninformative)
1976 annual report
1977 annual report
1978 annual report
1979 annual report
1980 annual report
1981 annual report
1982 annual report
1983 annual report
1984 annual report. This is the last one that contains a section on the Theatre Division.
The following year, Loews Corporation sold the theatres, a fact very briefly noted in the 1985 report. That report doesn't say who they sold the theatres to; Sony didn't enter the picture until a few years later.
You can find them yourself by going to TobaccoDocuments.com, searching the Lorillard collection, and entering search strings like
title:"annual report" AND title:680000
to find the 1968 report. Change it to 690000 for the 1969 report, 730000 for 1973, etc.
There seem to be many duplicate copies, and not all of them have images. Some have better images than others; if you do your own search you may find clearer copies than the ones I have linked to above. [ July 05, 2005, 01:21 PM: Message edited by: Ron Newman ]
