Tyler City Council is set to purchase the Liberty Theater at its meeting 9 a.m. today in City Hall, 212 N. Bonner Ave.
Plans are to turn it over to East Texas Symphony Orchestra as office space and a performance hall that will seat 300. City leaders have hailed the plan as a step in developing downtown as a business, arts and culture district.
The city announced in March it will buy the former movie theater at Broadway Avenue and Erwin Street for $190,000 using money from the hotel/motel tax. ETSOA agreed to fund renovations and to provide the building for city events such as the Festival on the Square.
According to ETSOA, renovations will cost about $800,000. Once renovations are finished, the city will transfer ownership.
The agreement details a 10-year lease. The city has also agreed to double its yearly contribution to the ETSOA to $25,000, which will also come from hotel/motel funds.
