Anyone know where I can get a list of theatres and showtimes for "Shrek The Third" in DLP projection, specifically for Orange County, CA?

Edwards Metro Pointe in Costa Mesa claimed they were getting Shrek in DLP, but it is not specified on Fandango.com.

Thanks!

Todd

I checked the www.dlp.com website and all of the listings show no listings for Shrek The Third in dlp. The Edwards theaters in the area are all showing Meet The Robinsons on their dlp screens until at least 5/24.

AMC At The Block in Orange is showing Shrek The Third in DLP on Friday. Check www.movietickets.com for showtimes.

Why don't you ask the person who frequently compiles such listings? I bet he reads this forum...

Most theatres are no longer advertising if the film is a digital presentation. It's becoming too common.

DLP is not the only type of digital projector in use today. That web site is not going to represent all of the cinemas that may offer a digital presentation.

Personally, 35MM is still the superior presentation. Digital presentations still have a ways to go. The primary advantage to digital is after the film has been run for several weeks.

Eric,

Digital projection is still early in its rollout, so I would not say it is too common, especially in Orange County. Granted, in the last few months we went from 1 screen to just under 10, we still have a long way to go. Approximately 600 screens in the US have been equipped with digital projection so far. There are a total of over 37,000 screens in the US, according to NATO. That's less than 2%.

35mm may be the superior presentation, but only under the best of conditions. There may be a handful of theatres here in Orange County that can show 35mm correctly and consistently (Century Bella Terra is one of those few), but most cannot (Edwards Triangle Square, Edwards Island, Edwards Metro Pointe).

The all-digital presentations I have seen since 1999 have all been flawless, with bright, evenly-illuminated screens and colors that jump off the screen. Most of the 35mm presentations I have seen have been cropped, out of focus, and has illumination drop-offs. Edwards Metro Pointe, as I indicated in an earlier post, really impressed me with their Real-D presentation of "Meet The Robinsons," which gives me hope that this theatre may improve and get more of my business in the future as they add more digital projectors.

There are at present about 3,200 screens in the U.S. and Canada equipped for digital projection. That 600 figure is for those that can handle 3-D presentation.

What newspaper do YOU read? All the movie ads/theatres in the LA Times Calendar section specify whether any given film is in digital projection. And, like Todd already said, it's not as common as you believe it is - especially in OC. 1 digital auditorium at Irvine Spectrum, 1 at Metro Pointe, 1 at Century Orange 25 and 2 at The Block hardly qualify as "common".

Chris,

This is the list, as far as I know, for DLP screens in Orange County, based on today's listings on Fandango:

Irvine - Edwards Irvine Spectrum 21 (x2)
Aliso Viejo - Edwards Aliso Viejo 20 (x3?)
Costa Mesa - Edwards Metro Pointe (x2?)
Orange - AMC 30 At The Block (x2)
Orange - Cinemark Century Stadium 25 (x1)
Anaheim - AMC Downtown Disney 12 (x1)

The question marks are there because Fandango is showing multiple sets of showtimes for DLP screenings of "Pirates."

I listed the Spectrum as having 2 screens because, last time I checked, they still had the old 1k DLP on screen #17, but only use the 2k with Real-D capability on screen #15.

I didn't know that Aliso Viejo even had digital projection installed there. I've surely never seen anything DLP there!

I'll have to pick up Friday's LA Times to see if they're actually running any digital projected showings of Pirates at all in OC. If they do, I'll be just as shocked as you are.

Either way, we both agree that digital projection in Orange County is not nearly as "common" as Eric makes it out to be!

Aliso Viejo had "Meet The Robinsons" in Real-D, and per Fandango, is scheduled to show "Pirates" on their DLP screen.

Other Digital screenings of "Pirates" on OC are:

Edwards Metro Pointe
Edwards Irvine Spectrum
AMC 30 At The Block
Cinemark Century Stadium
AMC Downtown Disney
Regal La Habra
