SOMETIMES PEOPLE ASK ME WHY THEATRE PROJECTIONISTS LOST THEIR POWER IN A CITY WHICH IS THE FILM CAPITAL. PROJECTION,CAMERA AND STAGE HANDS ARE THE OLDEST FILM UNIONS. FROM THE TURN OF THE CENTURY LOCAL 150 WAS 1 UNION. WE WORKED IN STUDIOS, THEATRES AND HOMES OF PRODUCERS, DIRECTORS AND ACTORS. IN 1937 THE STUDIO OPERATORS FELT THEY SHOULD HAVE THEIR OWN LOCAL. THEY FORMED LOCAL 165 AND BROKE AWAY FROM LOCAL 150. THIS OF COURSE HAD DEVASTATING EFFECTS ON LOCAL 150. BEFORE 165 LOCAL 150 NEGOTIATED ITS CONTRACT RIGHT ALONG WITH THE OTHER STUDIO UNIONS WHICH NUMBERED AT LEAST CLOSE TO 40. AFTER 1937 LOCAL 150 NO LONGER HAD THIS BENEFIT. FOR THE REST OF TIME LOCAL 150 HAD TO HAVE A SEPARATE ATTORNEY AND NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE TO DEAL WITH THE NATIONAL ASSN. OF THEATRE OWNERS. LOCAL 150 LOST TREMENDOUS FINANCIAL EQUALITY. 150'S HOURLY WAGES, BENEFITS, CONTRACT LENGTH AND RULES WERE ALL NEGATED. LOCAL 165 MADE 35% MORE YEARLY AND THEIR BENEFITS AND CONTRACT WERE UNBELIEVABLE. JOHN D. LOCAL 150 - RETIRED
