Scott (and Adam):

I noticed the grand-opening date cited in your database entries for several of the Century Dome theaters appear to be incorrect. I found different dates while researching original newspaper promotion. (I wonder, are the dates you cite what is listed in Syufy's records?)

SAN JOSE
Century 21 ... 11-30-64 (correct date should be 11-24-64)
Century 22 ... 03-15-66 (correct date should be 03-08-66)
Century 23 ... 03-20-67 (correct date should be 03-14-67)
Century 24 ... 07-18-68 (correct date should be 07-17-68)

SACRAMENTO
Century 21 ... 11-27-67 (correct date should be 11-21-67)
Century 22 ... 11-24-68 (correct date should be 06-18-68)

What is your source? Please provide a link if online. Thanks.

My source? Didn't I mention a source in my original comment? Anyway, I cannot link to an online source because the research was conducted on microfilm of the Sacramento Bee and San Jose Mercury News accessed at the State Library in Sacramento. I'm not aware of archived issues of either paper, for that era, being available online.

The dates did indeed come from some Syufy paperwork, which I'm certain was hastily prepared and in no way definitive. I will happily change the dates to reflect researched information. It would be cool to see the grand opening ads if you have time to post them here.

The opening date you have for the domes in Oakland and Pleasant Hill are also incorrect.

OAKLAND
Century 21 ... 1967 (correct opening date is 10-29-1968)

PLEASANT HILL
Century 21 ... 02-27-1967 (correct opening date is 02-21-1967)

As for South Salt Lake's Century 21, you give a date of 1967. That's correct, but a more specific opening date, if you want it, is 10-20-1967. (Utah theater historian Grant Smith's page, by the way, incorrectly cites 10-01-1967 as the opening date.)

I have the same opening dates as you for the domes in Orange and Reno.

The only scan of a grand-opening ad I have is for San Jose's Century 21 (and the quality isn't great). I'll email it to you, Adam. All the other details were based upon hand- or type-written notes while looking at microfilm. The Salt Lake City newspaper is available in the Google News Archive, and the Oakland paper (which includes coverage of Pleasant Hill) is available on the subscription-based Newspaper Archive if you care to look the stuff up yourself.
