HAPPY 20th, “TERMINATOR 2”

Compiled by Michael Coate

TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY, James Cameron’s popular follow-up to 1984’s THE TERMINATOR, was released in the United States and Canada on July 3, 1991, in 2,274 theaters. Only a small handful of those theaters, however, presented the movie with a discrete six-track sountrack, as intended to be heard. So which theaters had the premium-format presentations of T2? Read on…

I must have seen it in San Rafael at the Pacific Regency. I remember my friends mom taking all of us to see it as part of a birthday party.

Berkshire Mall 10, back when Hoyts was still running the theatre. By 91', the mall cinema had taken most of the business and decent bookings away from Pittsfield's Cinema Center 11; a bit of "poetic justice", I suppose, as the Cinema Center had driven the city's old downtown palaces out of business during the previous decade. In an extra turn of cyclical history, the Berkshire Mall 10 is now facing stiff competition from the Beacon Cinema; a modern theatre which is located in downtown Pittsfield, not far from where the old single screens once stood (coming full circle in one upsmanship).
