If they continue to have opposite bookings with the Alhambras, then they could end up with quite a few indies, which I can't see doing well at all in this area. How many people will show up for CYRUS or GET LOW this weekend? I'd love to take a peak in those auditoriums.

Alhambra will once again not get any new movies this week. Think it's just that AMC is getting priority until they're fully booked with new mainstream stuff, or do you think Regal will continue to be shut out for non-IMAX stuff? They just recently upgraded the Renaissance to all-digital, so one can presume they expect to still get top-notch stuff. Meanwhile, even though the Atlantic is due to close soon, they really should switch it over to second-run pricing -- seems ludicrous right now.

(And yes, I realize we probably should start an Atlantic Times Square 14 thread if this conversation continues.)

Matthew and I went to ATS yesterday. Love the Loews look and the Loews carpets! I submitted pics yesterday to Adam to post. It has a tiny lobby though.

Thanks for the photos. The theater looks nice. The carpeting was designed by AMC and appeared in AMC theaters long before AMC bought Loews. It was a coincidence that Loews also used a spotlight pattern in their logo.

Loews carpeting featured a pattern like what the Metreon used to use:

The Metreon was recarpeted with AMC carpet after these photos were taken.

However, the spotlight logos on the outside of the building might be a Loews design. AMC Castleton Square in Indianapolis also features spotlight logos in the lobby, but those are different than the Loews spotlights. Also the AMC in Indianapolis was a pure AMC design and has no Loews influence.

I also noticed that AMC is not using flat panel televisions for their menu boards anymore. Maybe they realized that it cost too much.

The new Starplex Lake Worth Stadium 14 has a VIP opening Thursday October 7th followed by a Grand Opening October 15th. The theater is located in Lake Worth, Texas.

Im wondering if Minnesota is going to open any new theatres in some communities that dont have one already? The newest one that just open within a year was the Showplace 14 ICON theatre at the shops west end in St Louis Park, Minnesota. Some citys that I think that could support a new theatre:

Cottage Grove
Savage
St Paul

Northfield: I thought Northfield was going to build a newer theater after they closed the cinema III.

Ridgedale: Ridgedale Shopping Center. Could build a new megaplex.

Id like to see maybe Century Theatres make a move up to Minnesota and expand into some citys that dont have theatres yet.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but this time of year is extremely boring for theatre news. So few openings and so few closings makes for not a lot to talk about.

With 2012 shaping up as the single most epic year for movies since 1939, I'm wondering if everybody's saving their openings for then. No sense in rolling out a spiffy new joint for "Thor" and "Transformers 3".

AMC and Regal forming new venture to acquire and release movies
The nation's two largest movie theater chains are about to encroach on Hollywood studios' turf.

Regal Entertainment Group and AMC Entertainment Inc. are close to launching a joint venture to acquire and release independent movies, according to people familiar with the situation, a part of the business historically dominated by the Hollywood studios.

The move potentially disrupts the longtime and delicate business relationship between theater operators and studios, in which they have acted as partners and divided a movie's box office ticket sales. Instead, the venture would essentially thrust theaters into the studio's role of distributor, turning a partner into a rival as the theaters' own movies compete for screens against those from the studios.

It also is occurring against a backdrop of increasingly strained relations between theaters and studios as the latter are looking to release movies directly into the home through video-on-demand shortly after they have appeared in theaters. Theater operators fear that will dissuade people from going to the movies.

The still unnamed company has yet to acquire any movies. However, the partners have hired a chief executive: Tom Ortenberg, a former senior executive for the Weinstein Co. and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., who has been working as an independent consultant since 2009.

AMC and Regal hope in part that by acquiring their own movies for distribution they will fill the supply-and-demand gap created by Hollywood's downshift in movie making. From 2007 to 2010, the number of movie releases in the U.S. dropped 16%, according to Box Office Mojo. At the same time, the theater industry's trade group estimates that the number of screens in the country has risen 3%, making fewer pictures available for a larger number of screens.

And with attendance flat over the last five years and down 5% in 2010, theater owners have been experimenting with ways to draw more people into their venues, such as showing live sports events and concerts.

Some chains have already taken steps to promote independent movies. AMC currently runs a program called AMC Independent that helps market independent films that play in its theaters. However, the company does not buy distribution rights to the pictures as its joint venture with Regal would.

People familiar with the plan said the joint venture will not compete with the studios by acquiring big-budget event films. Instead, the new company will seek out independently financed movies that may not otherwise make it into theaters, such as low-budget dramas, comedies and horror pictures.

Independent or specialty films have been largely eschewed by the studios in recent years but are experiencing a resurgence thanks to such broad-appeal movies as Oscar contenders "Black Swan" and "The King's Speech."

The venture's movies will have automatic access to theaters owned by AMC and Regal, which together control 31% of the nation's nearly 40,000 screens, but will also be offered to other cinemas. AMC and Regal also will aim to release movies on DVD, television and the Internet, which would also provide new sources of revenue that theater companies sorely need.

While a 1948 U.S. Supreme Court consent decree barred the major studios from owning movie theaters, the federal government has relaxed the rules over the last two decades. In 1996, MCA Inc., the former owner of Universal Pictures, bought a large stake in theater company Cineplex Odeon. Also, the parent company of Sony Pictures Entertainment previously owned Loews Theaters.

Currently, the Massachusetts theater chain National Amusements Inc., is privately held by Sumner Redstone, the controlling shareholder in Paramount Pictures parent Viacom Inc. And, the largest shareholder of Regal, Philip Anschutz, also owns the movie production company Walden Media.

In addition, independent film financiers such as Mark Cuban own small movie companies and theater chains.

Ortenberg did not respond to a request for comment, nor did a representative for Regal. An AMC spokeswoman declined to comment.

As a Regal emp, I wonder how this will work. Our company isn't exactly known for independent film presentations. But, if it gets some indie fare into my theater...I'm all for it.

The City of Downey City Council approved plans for Tierra Luna Marketplace, a 77-acre, 1.5-million-sq.-ft. mixed-use development in Downey, Calif.
Manarino Realty LLC and Industrial Realty Group will develop the project, which will include between 300,000 sq. ft. and 500,000 sq. ft. of primarily medical office space, a 225-room hotel, a movie theater, two 150,000-sq.-ft. big-box stores and a mix of shops and restaurants. Mitchell Hernandez and Richard Rizika, of CBRE, will handle leasing for the property.
Construction will begin in late 2012/early 2013.
When completed, Tierra Luna Marketplace will create more than 3,300 permanent jobs and generate $4.2 million in annual sales, property and hotel occupancy taxes.
“We have an opportunity to bring something truly significant to the City of Downey,” said Manarino Realty President Bob Manarino in a statement. “Our site benefits from its location near a sports park, the Columbia Memorial Space Center and Kaiser Permanente Hospital. We’re going to tie all of those uses together by creating a central place for this community to be entertained, to shop and to come together.”

So I was searching for who was the AMC Architect for AMC Studio 30 Olathe, KANSAS, not the Houston Texas location, and found out it was Hollis and Miller (hollisAndmiller.com) .

So on there website they have a projects page

where if you click on the Next gen theatre link, you can see an inside rendering of what the lobby / front of the theatre, and outside rending of what the theatre was going to look like. Had AMC went with Santa monica 12 for the Dine-In Location.

A friend of mine heard from a local firefighter that a new multiplex is going in near the Best Buy, Costco, etc., (actually, next door to the Burger King) at Smokey Point, exit 206 from I-5, Between Marysville and Stanwood, Washington.

Anybody know anything about this????
