New movie theater to open in spring

Dec 23, 2006

A stretch of windows is discreetly blacked out with small orange signs – nova cinema.

Inside, the vacated stores are being transformed into a five-screen movie theater with state-of-the-art sound and stadium seating.

“They are going to rip out the concrete and dig out the floor,” mall manager Lee Ann Wagner says. The theater will include 17,000-square-feet and replaces the Mikasa outlet and other stores.

The theater is expected to open in March or April.

The theater is being developed by Nova Cinemas with headquarters near Chicago, Ill. The company operates about 115 screens in theaters in Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida, Missouri and Georgia.

They offer first-run movies with ticket prices ranging from $3.75 to $8, depending on the location and the movies playing. The company advertises that it offers lower-cost concessions to make movie-going more affordable.

Ms. Wagner said Nova Cinemas opened a similar theater in Commerce, Ga. at a Tanger center that is doing well.

She said theaters in storefronts are becoming more common as shopping centers work to provide more of a “lifestyle” experience rather than just shopping.

The theater will offer more convenient movies to those who live in the eastern half of Kaufman County. Currently, the only theater is in Forney.

Not too many outlet malls have first-run theaters. The only one I know of is in Osage Beach, Missouri, which has a fairly nice 5-screener (at least it was fairly nice 11 years ago).
