It's movie madness in Cedar Rapids. Friday night was grand opening night for a 16-screen mega-movie theater there. It's creating what some say is some much needed competition.
It's a family night out for the Hoxie's. They admit they don't see a lot of movies. But this new theater opening up is close. "We wanted to come check it out and take the kids to a movie," Mr. Hoxie said.
They were impressed with what they found. For a theater to stay competitive these days, it seems you gotta be big. The new 61,000 square foot facility features 16 big screens with comfortable seats, party rooms, games and rides, plus a 50's style diner.
Managers at Carmike's Wynnsong Cinemas say they're not worried about the new 16 screen megaplex taking away business from their 12 screen theater. They say since the two are on opposite sides of town, both first-run movie theaters can survive. "This is nice for the northeast side of town to have something that's just as nice, just a big," managers say.
Managers predict their numbers will slip for a few weeks while people check out the new place in town. Kelly Hoskins with Wehrenberg Theatres says, "We like to think our theaters do create competition. It's better for the movie goers. It raises the bar for presentations of film."
The theatres are owned and operated by the Wehrenberg family, which has been in the movie business for 98 years based out of St. Louis, Missouri. This is their first venture in Iowa.
Hoskins says their new Galaxy 16 Cinema created 150 new jobs.
The new megaplex is near the intersection of Collins and Council Roads in Cedar Rapids. Eight theaters are open now. The other eight should be open by Christmas.
